The Smallest Cellphone We've Ever Used - Haier Black Pearl.

The Smallest Cellphone We've Ever Used - Haier America Launches "Black Pearl" GSM Micro Mobile Phone / MP3 Player with Color OLED Display.

The Smallest Cellphone We've Ever Used - Haier Black Pearl. This Lipstick Case-sized luxury phone is the ultimate fashion accessory for the active club set, women on the go, or anyone who would love an MP3 player that doubles as a full function GSM phone

The Haier Black Pearl is honestly the smallest phone we've ever seen. It's hard to get a sense of how small it is from the picture, but you can see that it's about the length and width of two of my fingers, and around the thickness of one of my fingers on end. And I don't have large hands.

To recap: the BP is an unlocked GSM phone with MP3 playback, FM radio and Bluetooth compatibility. It's shiny—shinier than an iPod—and very very round. Take a look at the gallery and we'll have a full review for you later this week.

The micro sized Black Pearl is finished in what can best be described as a gun metal-mercury mirrored surface (reminiscent of black pearl) and features built in MP3 player, FM Stereo tuner, Voice Recorder and full color OLED display w/ delightful 3-D graphics

Simple navigation is done via side mounted thumb rocker switch

Additional features include Bluetooth Stereo transmitter, for use with stereo headsets or speakers, USB memory drive and Trans-Flash slot for additional storage capacity up to 1GB

The Black Pearl measures only 3.5" L x 1 1/4" W x 3/4" D (90 x 35 x1 7.8mm) and weighs 2.24 oz (64g), so its roughly equivalent to a lipstick case!!

It operates in USA and worldwide on GSM networks in GSM900/DCS1800/PCS frequencies, and is charged by standard mini USB connector which also serves as data transfer cable.

Apple is working on a 12-inch ultra thin MacBook Pro.

Launch a 12-inch MacBook Pro Apple, please...

MacBook Pro Apple

We've been talking about a "MacBook Thin" since before Apple transitioned its laptops to the Intel platform -- and it looks like the long-awaited Macintel ultra-thin, ultra-portable speed king is heading to market at last!

Ultraportable MacBook Specs Leaked?

Looks like the rumors surrounding that 12-inch MacBook Pro we spoke of earlier are starting to beef up. The gang at Mac OS Rumors is convinced Apple is working on a MacBook "Thin" and have listed all the specs they got from their "trusted sources in Cupertino and Southeast Asia." Apple may be working on an ultraportable, but we call BS on this "leak." Here's why.

Apple fanboys may wanna believe that's possible, but fitting all of that in a chassis that's supposed to be thinner than the current MBP? Keep dreaming. Compare that to the MacBook (which has integrated graphics and tops out at 2GHz) and you'll realize those specs are way too high to be real. As much as I'd love a thinner MacBook Pro for the holidays, this is beyond wishful thinking

Speculation has been running rampant in recent days over a "12-inch MacBook Pro"....very much similar to the 'MacBook Thin' that we have been talking about here on Rumors since before the first Intel-based Apple laptops shipped.

We can unequivocably confirm that such an ultraportable Macintel laptop exists -- not only that it exists, but that recent rumblings on the grapevine have been unusually close to the mark.

The key mission of the "Thin" project was to scale down the size of Pro features without compromising them. The Thin is intended to be the fastest, most feature-rich ultraportable laptop on the market.

MacBook Pro Apple

Without further ado, here are the specs we have been told to expect based on exhaustive recon from trusted sources in Cupertino and Southeast Asia:

My 12-inch PowerBook has just turned three years old and it’s really struggling these days.

With its 1GHz PowerPC G4 processor and 512MB of RAM it seems to have given up the ghost running iPhoto recently, let alone PhotoShop.

I have to save everything onto an external hard drive because there is rarely ever more than 1GB of space left on this drive (it has only 37.14GB to offer). Sometimes I wonder where all the space goes…

  • "Macbook Thin" -- spec-wise, primarily a variant of the Pro family but will probably be branded as separate from the standard *or* Pro MacBook families. Shipping name is unconfirmed.
  • 12-inch widescreen display, 1280x800 resolution.
  • 2.16 or 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors
  • 1GB of DDR2-667 memory standard. Max. capacity 3GB.
  • Standard "Pro" ports: USB2, Firewire 400 & 800, Gigabit Ethernet, Digital/Analog Audio minijack I/O ports.
  • ExpressCard expansion slot (believed to be /34 type)
  • Similar storage to "Pro": 2.5in SATA HDDs at 120GB & up, 'Combo' or 'Super' optical drive.

And I have to move over to Emma’s Power Mac every time I need to burn a DVD, because I’m lacking a SuperDrive…

So, I hear you ask, why haven’t you upgraded?

    Well. I reply. I want a 12-inch MacBook Pro. That’s why.

Apple’s portable range right now really doesn’t offer me what I need more than any of the above. It doesn’t offer small and light.

  • ATi Radeon Mobility X1600 or nVIDIA GeForce GO 7600 graphics systems with 256MB of VRAM.
  • Mini-DVI display connector with full second display capabilities
  • Of course, Built-in iSight, stereo microphone, Airport Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR.
  • Battery life is expected to be "best in class" at about 6.5 hours real-world, some reports have suggested up to 8 hours is possible.

For all its faults, my 12-inch PowerBook offers me the most important feature of all. I can carry it home at the weekends when I have work to do, and I can carry it around with me when I’m at Macworld San Francisco and other similar events. A 15-inch MacBook Pro is too heavy and a 13-inch MacBook is too heavy – plus I’d really rather have the sleek aluminium casing anyway.

All in all, a very solid new offering....the real question, at this time, is when it will ship. Right now the lineup of new non-Mac products at Macworld San Francisco that Apple will be introducing is so jam-packed with iPhone and iTV (new high-end iPods are expected to be announced several weeks later) plus several new software packages and an updated Leopard Preview that many rumor-mongers are skeptical about a MacBook Thin announcement the same day....but either way, it's not too much longer to wait now.

It has to be small and light or it’s just not doing it’s job as far as I’m concerned. So, I sincerely hope that Apple designer Jonathan Ive has been busily designing a smaller MacBook Pro for Apple CEO Steve Jobs to show of at Macworld San Francisco. Who cares about the iPhone, it’s the MacBook Pro I’m waiting for.

The general grapevine consensus seems to be that the Thin will ship in earnest within 10 weeks, and be announced in about six. Stay tuned for regular updates on this and every other Mac-related topic here on the Original Mac Rumor Site!

Philips launches a handful of Vista MCE-compatible remotes

Be prepared for Windows Vista with our complete new range of remote controls and receivers

While we've already seen a few Windows Vista Media Center Edition remotes, Philips has just rolled out a whole host of its own along with assorted USB receivers.

    IR versions

    RC1974501/00
Basic remote control for Windows Vista
    - Specially designed for Windows Vista MCE new 10’UI
    - Refreshing and sophisticated design
    - Incorporates Microsoft-recommended RC6 IR protocol
    - Up to 45 keys
    - WLP Windows Vista Premium ready
    - Dimensions: 215mm x 43mm x 32mm

    RC1974502/00
Backlight remote control for Windows Vista

    - Specially designed for Windows Vista Media Center new 10' UI
    - Refreshing and sophisticated design
    - 22 white back-lighted keys
    - Incorporates Microsoft-recommended RC6 IR protocol
    - Up to 45 keys
    - WLP Windows Vista Premium ready
    -Dimensions: 215mm x43mm x 32mm

    RC1974603/00
Advanced IR learning backlight remote for Windows Vista

    - Specially designed for Windows Vista MCE new 10’UI
    - Refreshing and sophisticated design
    - 23 white back-lighted keys
    - TV Standby & Volume Learnable keys
    - Incorporates Microsoft-recommended RC6 IR protocol
    - Up to 46 keys
    - WLP Windows Vista Premium ready
    - Dimensions: 215mm x 43mm x 32mm

These range from a more standard style remote (RC1974501/00) with the huge number of buttons up and down to its slightly upgraded counterpart, the RC1974502/00, which appears to be the same, except with backlighting on the keys. The third version of the family, the RC1974603/00 also has backlighting, but adds "advanced IR learning," although we're not really sure what makes it more advanced than a remote with standard IR learning. However, the top model of the family includes an RF receiver and transmitter, just in case you need that extra range. Beyond that, there's also some PC-card remotes that'll jack in with your laptop, but the best one out of all of them is the TINO SRM7500/xx -- this larger model comes with its own built-in LCD so that you can navigate and control music playback without turning on the screen of your home entertainment center. Plus, its got them learnin' smarts too, so it can show those other remotes who's boss. Philips neglected to mention how much any of this stuff will cost, nor when it will be released; until we find out, we'll just have to settle for our more traditional channel-changing wands.
