Tyan launches Typhoon 600 Series Personal Supercomputer

TyanPSC, the OEM business unit of Tyan Computer Corporation, launched the Typhoon 600 series, its next generation personal supercomputer (PSC). Using Intel Xeon 5300 “Clovertown” processors, TyanPSC's Typhoon personal supercomputer is an easy-to-deploy, easy-to-use, turnkey system that delivers a stunning 256 gigaflops in an office or any other environment, while only requiring power from a standard socket .
"We're leaving the performance compromise of personal supercomputing behind us by delivering a system into office environments that pumps out one quarter of a Teraflop without the mess and difficulty of the back room data centre model," said Mark Burnett, European product manager of TyanPSC. "Our Typhoon 600 series represents a tremendous leap for our customers who require performance-on-demand. With the Typhoon 600 series, you just open the box, roll it into your office and plug it in."
TyanPSC is demonstrating the Typhoon 600 series this week at Supercomputing 2006 conference in Tampa, Florida, in cooperation with its key partners in high performance computing (HPC), including Intel Corporation, Microsoft Corp., Mellanox Technologies, and Wolfram Research. The hardware combination of Tyan's cluster system design technologies, Intel's processor technologies and Mellanox's InfiniBand capabilities showcases the performance and efficiency the Typhoon 600 systems achieves when running Microsoft Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 and ISV applications, such as LSTC's LS-DYNA and Wolfram’s gridMathematica.
Platform Partnerships

The TyanPSC Typhoon 600 series is a platform designed to solve the computational challenges individual scientists and workgroups face in environments that traditionally do not have access to local supercomputing. The Typhoon 600 series PSC is purpose-built to be deployed and used like a PC, removing the complexity and management that is usually expected from a system that provide 256 gigaflops.
“Companies, including Tyan, are providing technology designs that take advantage of the new Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors,” said Jim Pappas, director of initiative marketing for Intel Corporation. “These new quad-core processors provide breakthrough performance and efficiency for offices and other constrained environments.”
TyanPSC has partnered with Mellanox to offer InfiniBand interconnect options to provide performance scalability and robustness for the Typhoon 600 series. “Mellanox InfiniBand increases the overall compute cluster efficiency and allows performance-driven applications to optimally utilise the CPU resources,” said Gilad Shainer, senior technical marketing manager at Mellanox Technologies. “Taking advantage of InfiniBand’s capabilities, the Tyan Typhoon 600 series delivers a high-end, personal supercomputing solution for engineers, scientists and financial analysts.”
ISV Partnerships
ISV partnerships, such as ANSYS/Fluent and Wolfram Research augment Typhoon's robust turnkey capabilities. “Tyan’s focus on a turnkey personal cluster helps bring high-performance computing within the reach of more customers doing computer aided engineering,” said Chris Reid, vice president, marketing at ANSYS, Inc. “Both ANSYS 11 and FLUENT 6.3 support the Microsoft Windows Compute Cluster
Server 2003 solution, which is a good fit for our customers who are already working in a Windows environment. We are pleased to see Tyan providing an easily deployed cluster, which will help our customers expand their use of our simulation software.”
